Lately, I have been pumping as often as I could. I will be going back to work in a few days and I want to stash as much breastmilk as I could so that my baby will have enough supply while I’m gone. Also, this is my way of establishing my supply, aside from direct feeding, I express milk when baby doesn’t want to nurse.
These last few days, I noticed that my supply really increased. There’s your proof, the principles of demand and supply really works! So for breastfeeding moms out there who needs to increase milk production, keep on pumping!
If this is the case, then I guess there is no such thing as over pumping! I once read from a forum that one mommy does “power pumping.” What she does is pump every 2 hours, so in a day where there are 24 hours, she pumps 12 times! She swears by this method.
I also think that overpumping is a myth because even if we do not pump, we usually nurse our babies on demand. So if a baby is an active nurser, then she will nurse all the time too!
Well there you have it, overpumping is non existent! So go ahead, pump and nurse all you want!
In this post, I want to talk about the importance of the maternity leave SSS provides for its female members after giving birth. 60 days for normal delivery and 78 days for C-Section.
For both baby number 1 and number 2, I had a C-Section, so that automatically gave me 78 calendar days of maternity leave each. Being a member entitles me that. Another benefit is also being paid for the whole duration of the maternity leave, which is advanced by the company or the bank that I work for. All I need to do is submit the required documents on time.
For a mom like me, this 78 days is very important. In this period, I recover from giving birth or from the operation. I regain my strength so I can take care of my newborn, which is no easy feat especially when you just underwent a major operation. Aside from taking care of the baby, I need to take care of myself and my husband also. And if you are a second time mother, you also need to take care of your firstborn. Supermom, is that you?
Being a breastfeeding mom, this is also the time I establish the bond between me and the baby. Nursing as often as we could, all day and night we’re together. Not only do I have to feed the baby and make him gain weight. I also need to increase my milk supply so that I can store some milk before I go back to work, which is what I did.
And now, my 78 days is almost up. On Monday, I will be going back to work. Everything will change. Adjustments need to be made again.
When I became pregnant with my second daughter Denise, I told myself that I will try my best to exclusively breastfeed her this time. You see, my 1st born Daphne was mixed fed with breastmilk and formula until she was 18 months old. That’s no easy feat, I know, I am proud of my achievement too!
Now, I am more educated and regardless of the method, whether through nursing directly or through bottle feeding, all she will get is my precious milk!
Well, she did take some formula for the first few days of her life, but when my milk came in, she definitely didn’t need the formula anymore. She’s 2 months old and I am proud to say that it’s all my milk now that she’s taking!

BREASTFEEDING ESSENTIAL NUMBER 1
MEDELA SWING ELECTRIC PUMP
This Medela Swing Electric Pump is so durable. I used this for 18 months for my 1st daughter. I brought it everyday to the office so I could pump there. And now it’s my 2nd daughter’s turn to make use of it. Definitely worth the price hubby paid for! It’s a single pump and very handy. It also boasts of the 2-phase expression technology. When baby is asleep for a longer period of time, I pump so that I can let down my milk and just store it. It’s true what they say that to increase your milk supply, you have to follow the principles of supply and demand. Just a few days ago, I noticed that there was a decrease in my milk supply, so I made a career of nursing directly when baby is awake and pumping when baby is asleep or is full. Even in the wee hours of the morning, I wake up and pump. And true enough, my supply increased. It also helped that I got a mini back massage from hubby. I also requested for soups to be included in our daily meals. I am also taking oatmeal quaker with chocolate and eggs. I heard oatmeal’s effective as a galactagogue.
Since I will be going back to work a few weeks from now, it’s important for my supply to stabilize. I have been pumping and saving my milk using my Breastfeeding Essential Number 2, see below.
BREASTFEEDING ESSENTIAL NUMBER 2

This is the first time that I used a storage bag for my milk. I used to just pump and store in a feeding bottle. For my 1st born, the milk I expressed at work was just enough for her to consume the next day. Sometimes, it’s not even enough that’s why she was mixed fed. For baby number 2, I read and educated myself through the various breastfeeding forums. While I haven’t gone back to work, I started storing my milk through storage bags. I still store in the bottles though, for the times that I will be doing something and not available to nurse directly. What I do now is, if I am able to get 4 oz or more milk, I put it in the storage bag and place it in the freezer; if not, I just put it in a feeding bottle and place it in the fridge.

GIGI AMORE NURSING BRAS
Being a very practical mommy, I searched and searched for the right nursing bra to use, comfortable yet affordable. I found the Gigi Amore Brand inside SM Department Store. These nursing bras open in front, very accessible for me. While one arm is holding baby, the other hand easily get to unbutton the bra. The bra’s very comfortable to use because it’s all cotton, they are also thick enough to avoid leakage.

BENCH TUBE TOP (USED AS BELLY BAND)
I haven’t been able to shop yet for my nursing apparel, as I am still searching for affordable brands. I also find those belly bands in the net quite expensive, so I improvised. I bought tube tops to use as belly band. I wear it inside my shirt or blouse just below the chest area, so that when I pull up my shirt to nurse, I wouldn’t be exposing my skin. Of course, I still use a cover up, and that’s my Breastfeeding Essential Number 5.

My ever reliable shawl. This is an ordinary shawl. I just tied it in one end and wear it over whatever I’m wearing. It works just as good as a nursing cover. I use this when I go out with baby, I also use this in the office when I pump.

My husband just told me a story just now. You see, my daughter and my husband are in Hong Kong for a vacation. They left me because I’m pregnant with our 2nd baby.
Anyway, there are times that Daphne, our tough little tiger, is so hard headed and she wants everything to go her way. It’s like her way or no way at all!
Just this morning, she and her daddy had an argument. Her daddy was busy doing the laundry and she was just left playing by herself. However, she got bored so she started doing things that annoyed her daddy. She played with her bottles, dropped some milk on the floor… In short, she started making a mess! Her daddy got angry and scolded her. She cried and shouted and laid on the floor! Her daddy just ignored her, because he knew that the more he soothes her, the more she will level up her tantrums! She even asked help from her grandma, my mother in law! Since my MIL knew that my husband is so angry already, she just ignored the little tiger and her tantrums! After a while, she got tired and stopped.
Now fast forward in the afternoon, Daphne was busy watching something on her IPad. Suddenly, my husband noticed that tears were falling down her cheeks. My husband thought she wasn’t feeling well. He asked her if her tummy was aching, she said no. When he asked why she was crying, she hid her face with her hand and kept on saying that it was nothing. She even got mad at her daddy for continuously asking her why she was crying.
A few minutes later, she was still on her IPad, and though there were no tears already, she was still teary eyed. This time, her daddy got very curious already. He silently sat beside her and watched with her. Daphne was watching a clip about Mickey and Pluto. And this is how the story went.
Mickey Mouse was fixing his Christmas Tree. Pluto knocked it down. So Mickey got mad and scolded Pluto. Pluto quietly went to a corner, he thought Mickey doesn’t want him anymore, so he left the house. Come Christmas Eve, Mickey was looking all over the house for Pluto, when he realized that he wasn’t home, he searched the whole town until he found him.
Daphne, at her age, was able to relate to this story. The scenario was very much like the scenario this morning with her daddy. That is why she was crying when she was watching this clip. She placed herself in Pluto’s shoes. She thought Daddy is mad at him and doesn’t want her anymore.
My husband got teary eyed also while watching the clip. He realized that Daphne, even with her toughness, she’s still got a soft spot in her tiny little heart. Maybe she just can’t express herself that much, but we know what she is feeling. Oh how we love our little tiger!
There were actually 3 Set Menus to choose from, we chose Set Menu B. The price is not that bad since it’s 50% off! I’ve already made reservations for next Saturday at around 8pm. We will be celebrating my mom’s birthday.

Update: We were quite disappointed with the turn out of our dinner. For the price, even if already at 50% off, we think it wasn’t worth it! We could have gotten more of what we paid for in other Chinese restaurants. Maybe we were just expecting too much! The taste of the dishes was just so-so. It’s like we’ve eaten at a non-Chinese restaurant. The serving wasn’t the normal size that would be enough for 8 persons. So we decided to order 2 more dishes. That night, even a Saturday, there weren’t too many people dining at the Podium Branch, so you guessed it, service wasn’t that good either. They served everything all at the same time. In a hurry? Isn’t lauriat supposed to be served one after the other? Or at least, they let us savor the dish first before serving the next. Even the trademark Taho wasn’t good! Our neighborhood Taho vendor serves taho better!
There were only 2 things I was happy about with this experience. First was that they didn’t charge us for the cake we brought in. Lastly, they didn’t ask us to leave when they closed. (We were the last diners there!)
On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate this voucher a 4! And I wouldn’t recommend this branch to anyone. I still prefer the original Gloria Maris in Greenhills, San Juan.
In my previous post, I have mentioned that our company is hosting private dinners for valued clients. Like the one I had with Inagiku, here’s another experience I might remember for the rest of my life. Just last night, I had a great dinner at the Shang Palace, a Chinese restaurant located at the 2nd floor of Makati Shangri-La Hotel.
For this night though, since there were a few groups of clients and their families, we didn’t join them for dinner anymore. Instead, together with my Branch Head and an Officer from the Head Office, we had our own private dinner just outside the VIP Rooms.

Same drink list from the previous dinner at Inagiku. But since this is a different resto, there’s a different Menu.
For a closer look at the Menu
First of the list was the appetizer, Chilled Sliced Lobster with Fresh Fruits Salad and Fried Taro Puff. One will just have to read the name of what’s to be served, and you’ll be drooling already. There were a few slices of lobster on top of the fruit salad. On the side was the fried taro puff. The taro puff was crisp on the outside and so soft on the inside. The fruits and the slices of lobster matched perfectly. Can you spell yumminess? And it’s just the appetizer / salad!
When eating at a Chinese restaurant or a Chinese event at that, the soup will never be missed out. It’s like part of the whole lauriat meal. This soup is a mixture of different types of mushrooms, dried scallops (both of which are staple of chinese cuisines), some asparagus and of course, fish lip. Oops, before you react, it isn’t literally the lip of the fish. It’s a part of the fish where all the vitamins are located. So when you eat that part, you’re getting all the nutrition from the fish.
Just the salad and the soup made me so full already. However, we’re not about to stop there. This is, after all, a SET dinner. So let’s continue. Up next is one of the 3 main courses, Stew Pork Ribs in “Mosiak” Style. I’m not so sure about this “Mosiak” Style, I tried to search it on the Internet, but I didn’t get any hits at all. Maybe, this is the Chef’s own style of cooking. Since the pork ribs was stewed, the meat was already very succulent. It has this melt on your mouth feel. The sauce was kinda sweet tasting (but not too sweet). Maybe because almost half of the slab was mostly fats, the natural oil from the pork already mixed with the sauce. The mixed pickeles on top of it also made this kinda sour-y taste to complement the sweet taste.
After the very meaty experience comes another main course, this time a healthier choice. My favorite fish of all time, the Lapu Lapu. Again, the Chef cooked the fish in another style, the “mui choy” cantonese style. According to http://original-chinese-recipes.blogspot.com/2009/08/chinese-recipe-steamed-mui-choy-with.html, “Mui choy is preserved (pickled) chinese cabbage that has undergone a fermentation process. It is a traditional preparation method used to preserve food after the harvest for winter months and consumption at the later time. It is commonly used in braised dishes (such as pork belly) and other Chinese dishes.” “There are two types of Mui Choy, one is salted while the other one is sweetened…” I’m not so sure which of the 2 types the Chef used. All I remember is that the fish tasted really good.
After the fish, I was so full already that I had to take the next course home. The beef itself is a task to take, what more the sticky rice with some sausauges and mushrooms. I will have to ask my husband about the feedback on the food.
Since I didn’t consume the last of the 3 main courses, I was able to breathe for a while and get ready for dessert. There’s one problem though, the original dessert on the menu has some XO Liquor on it, take a look. I asked my boss how it tasted. It was yummy! Hmm.. too bad…
I asked the server who was gracious enough, to serve me another bowl of dessert. For a safe choice, I choose the Mango Sago. Fortunately, it was yummy too! The juice was made of Fresh Mango Shake and there were a lot of fresh fruits under the bowl, aside from the many many tapiocas floating!
Another night to remember, one to charge to experience. I thank my company for the opportunity. Not only was I able to taste great food and experience great service, I was also able to chitchat with some of our most valued clients, and on a more personal note.
If you’re looking for a Chinese restaurant, Shang Palace is definitely on top of my list! Never mind the bill to come, it’s definitely worth it!

Here’s the Drink Menu made specially for our clients.
I wasn’t able to try any of the specialty drinks since I’m preggy and I can’t drink any drinks with liquor in it. I opted for the Pineapple Chilled Juice and it was nothing special. Well, they said the white and red wine were great. So, it was just me who didn’t enjoy my drink.
Here’s our Set Menu for the night and it did look yummy the first time I read it.
Let’s start with our appetizer. The meat under the green beans was smoked duck. Under that was like Egg Jelly with Tofu on it. On the little saucer was Mushroom in a Jelly. The fried fish with crab roe on top sits beside the beans. I liked the smoked duck the best. The others were just so-so for my taste.
Now, the Green Salad was just that, Green Salad. The whole bowl was full of chopped greens. Though the crunchy stuff on top of it made the texture different and the dressing tasted yummy.
Before the main course was served, the Teppan Chef started his Teppan cooking. By the way, this was how the room looked while it was still unused.
The Teppan Chef made some entertaining moves when he cooked the fried rice with beef. He shaped the fried rice into a heart, and he made the heart beat with his pan. He also made some sounds using the seasonings. But that was it, after that he just kept on cooking the other food. I had a chance to dine at a Teppan Resto before (but it’s closed already), and the Chef there was much entertaining. Well anyway, the smell of the butter and the oil mixed with the fried rice made the whole room smells good.
After the Rice, we were served our Miso Soup. I just had a taste of it, the smell’s very strong. I can’t take it.
Here comes one of the best parts! The Seafood Plate. Panfried Salmon, Tiger Prawn and Scallops. The Teppan Chef flamed the prawn and the salmon to have that smoky taste. The Salmon’s very fresh, it doesn’t have that fishy taste. The Scallops’ yummy also! The size is not so big, not so small. Tender and juicy. And last but not the least, the Tiger Prawn tasted so good. It’s just too bad that it’s only 1 piece. Bitin much!
Oh, I forgot to mention that they made this special seafood sauce also.
And now we’ve come to the Super Main Course. The US Kobe Beef. I’m not much of a fan of beef, but I must say, this Kobe Beef really tasted differently. We asked the Chef to cook it Medium Well, but we all thought he overcooked it. Some bites were just right, some were chewy. But since it’s US KOBE BEEF. We couldn’t complain more, right?
After that very satisfying beef meal, comes our dessert. It was supposed to be a choice between Fruit in Season Jelly, Coffee Jelly and Ice Cream. But the server forgot to ask our personal choices, he served the Fruit Jelly for all of us. We complained that we wanted a different dessert. So he willingly obliged and asked us our personal choices. I wanted to try the Green Tea Ice Cream and the Coffee Jelly, but I can’t. So for dessert, I had Fruit in Season Jelly and the Red Bean Ice Cream.
The Fruit in Season Jelly is nothing special. The watermelon even had some seeds. The jelly didn’t taste anything.
The Red Bean Ice Cream however tasted good. The Ice Cream was Vanilla Flavored, mixed with some red beans., which you almost couldn’t taste already.
Overall, the Inagiku experience was good. The whole menu would make you really full, especially if you will consume the whole bowl of fried rice! The Seafood Plate and the Beef would make up for the whole set. The server and the Chef made sure that we got what we need. The service was really great. Come to think it, it should be as we are dining inside a very pricey Japanese restaurant in a 5star hotel. If you’ll ask me though if I would be willing to pay Php 8,500.00 for that meal, I definitely would not think twice, I would not pay that much. I just don’t think spending that much money for a meal is worth it. But if you have the means and the moolah to do so, why not?
