Tonsilitis – Take It Seriously

It’s my first post for the year and guess what, it is me battling Tonsilitis!

Never knew Tonsilitis could knock me out like this.  It has been almost 4 days now.  Started with chills and slight fever on Tuesday night.  No signs of inflammation of my tonsils yet so I thought maybe I was coming down with the flu.  Didn’t sleep well that night so it resulted to on and off headache.  Not to mention the body ache I felt, well uhm, for the whole body.

All of these symptoms were at least somewhat bearable, I slept through it the whole Wednesday.  But this time though, I was having difficulty in swallowing already.  So my hubby checked my tonsils and boy, were they inflammed!

The hardest and most painful part is just plain swallowing.  Minimized my food intake already but needed to force myself to eat as I started taking antibiotics already.  Even water’s having a hard time passing through.  Started gargling with Listerine as well but doesn’t seem to make any difference.

Body ache and chills vanished the 2nd day.  Feverish still.  But pain in my throat is just unbearable.  Nothing like I felt before.  Makes sleeping a little hard also.  Unless it is already 4 in the morning and your eyes just shut off by itself.

Staying at home in exile makes the internet my bestfriend.  Checked out home remedies and tried the lime water with salt for drinking.

Also tried gargling apple cider vinegar mixed with little bit of water.  You can feel the sharpness of the vinegar.  Just doing the process is so painful for my throat. Gargling makes you gag and if I gag, the pain triples.

I was hoping I could go back to work on the 3rd day, hoping that my apple cider vinegar gargle will lessen the inflammation when I woke up.  But hey, it is still the same.

Still gonna continue gargling with both Listerine and vinegar.  Still gonna take my antibiotics.  I need to tough this one out.

This Tonsilitis already took 3 days away from me from New Year’s 1st week and it’s painful for me, literally and figuratively, and it’s pretty hard for the kids as well.

You see, as I have mentioned, I have been exiled in another room away from the kids for the same number of days as we are preventing the virus / bacteria to transfer to anybody else.

Can’t help with the chores as well, thankful that my husband and our househelp are taking care of the kids while I can’t.

So there, that sums up my journey in battling Tonsilitis.  Will keep you updated.

Update *01.06.2017

I have tried the home remedies and have taken 5 capsules of self prescribed Erythromycin.  The inflammation has worsened and the pain is going up to my right ear already.

Decided to go to E.R. to have my condition checked.

Upon seeing my tonsils, the doctors already kept pushing the idea of me being admitted for proper treatment of my tonsilitis.  My tonsils are kissing already!  Meaning the airway has almost been blocked due to the severe inflammation of my tonsils.  Doctors don’t want me risking myself and get to the point where I will have difficulty in breathing.

I opted not to be admitted and promised the doctors that I will religiously drink my oral meds and do all their reminders.

I also had 1 dose of antibacterial med injected through IV for faster result.

Stayed a total of 4 hours in the E.R. tonight and I am grateful that my husband was there with me.  We were even laughing about my condition knowing that I can be better in a few days.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

For now, it’s hands free for me!

Update* 01.09.2017

Getting better and definitely on my way to recovery!  Nothing beats total and complete rest for 5 days!

Have been taking my meds round the clock, once every 6 hours.  Too strong that I needed to take a nap every time.  A little head ache here and there, part of its side effects.  Tonsils still swollen but not painful anymore.  Can now swallow and eat normal food, just as long as it’s not hard and sharp.  A raspy throat is better than a painful one.

Update *01.15.2017

Finally off my antibiotics, but as advised by my pharmacist brother in law, I need to take Probiotics to cancel all “cancer-prone” particles I could have gotten in my antibiotics.

Not much to lose if I follow right?  So I am taking Erceflora now.  Doesn’t taste good.  So better have some candy or anything that could cover the taste every time you take it.

My tonsils are not swollen anymore, not 100% ok though.  Still has a feeling of raspiness and when I swallow, I still feel a little bit of something.

Don’t take Tonsilitis for granted.  It’s painful and it’s a serious disease because you might not be able to breathe if your tonsils close your air passage.  If your tonsils are big, try to gargle water with salt as a precaution.

The battle is  not over but I am thankful that everything is better now.

Maybe I just needed to slow down and have REAL REST.  My body couldn’t take it anymore.

Thank you to everyone who said their prayers and to everyone who were concerned.

Love you guys!

Family Mode: Madame Pearl’s BreathEasy Patch

It’s unfortunate that Baby Number 1 got sick on our first day of vacation.  Fortunately, I always bring their medicines when we travel.  But aside from the medicines, there are some other things which can help us.

And that’s what I like here in Hong Kong.  They have a wide selection of over the counter what nots which we could use to alleviate sickness.

D has clogged nose which is causing her fever.  So to help her breathe easily, we bought this Madame Pearl’s BreathEasy Patch which was referred by a friend.

image

It sells at 40HKD for 5 patches.  In Peso, it’s about 240 for a pack so roughly 50 Pesos for each patch.  Patch lasts for 8 hours.  The patch looks like a thin paper cloth.

image

Good thing about it is there’s no skin contact as you’ll only need to stick it on your cloth near the chest area.

According to the packaging, it’s all natural.  No camphor, salicylic acid and naphthalene added.  The natural essential oil  used are Eucalyptus, Thymus and Pinus.  These can help breathing easier through inhalation.

It is best applied when about to sleep.

Smells so good because of the eucalyptus.  Everyone can benefit from the patch.

Will definitely buy some to bring home.

I just hope D gets better the soonest!

What is Kawasaki Disease?

When Dr Alex, Daphne’s pediatrician, told me that Kawasaki is the opposite of Dengue and that to treat it would need confinement, that alone scared the hell out of me!

In Dengue, the blood platelets decrease.  In Kawasaki, the blood platelets shoot up!

So upon getting home, I immediately looked up Kawasaki on the net.  Turns out it’s a disease which was named after a Japanese doctor who discovered it, Dr Tomisaku Kawasaki!

Kawasaki disease usually affects children below 5 years of age. Experts still don’t know what causes the disease. But it’s a disease which involves the mouth, the tongue, the hands, the feet and the skin. If left untreated, it may cause severe heart problems to a child.

Fortunately, when recognized and treated early, children diagnosed with this disease can fully recover in a matter of days.

I read from KidsHealth that the symptoms of the Kawasaki Disease come in several phases.  The first phase which lasts for 3 – 5 days usually involves the following:

  • fever that comes and go, as high as 39 degrees celsius or 104 degrees fahrenheit
  • redness in the eyes
  • swollen palms of the hands and soles of the feet
  • very red rashes on hands and feet
  • strawberry tongue / tongue with goosebumps like dots
  • red, dry and cracked lips
  • sore throat
All these symptoms Daphne had, that’s why I was so scared! I can’t wait to see the results of her CBC that night!
Of course, with all these symptoms the child has, the child would be extremely uncomfortable.  He wouldn’t even want to eat.
The second phase would begin within 2 weeks of when the fever first started.  And the symptoms would be more severe:
  • fever is still persistent
  • peeling of the hands and feet
  • diarrhea
  • vomiting
  •  abdominal or joint pain
Experts advise to call the doctor when experiencing these symptoms.  But I suggest that even on first phase, you go see the doctor to prevent any damage.
Because once the heart is affected, it would be a long journey of treatments and medications.

my cough won’t let me sleep

I am writing this because I am experiencing it right now.  I can’t sleep.

I’ve been struck by a cough and cold virus. And I was told by my OB not to take any meds.  Even those that I take before I got pregnant.

I wrote about what she told me to do a few posts back.

But my then condition has worsen.

It’s already 5:13 am on my computer clock and I’m still wide awake.

Why, because of my pestering cough, I keep on waking up every hour since I went to bed at 1230 last night.

I called up my hubby who is in HK and told him about my situation. He told me to make myself a warm calamansi juice to soothe my throat.  It’s because when I cough, it’s like my whole chest will explode. That’s how worse it is!

I followed his advice.  I stopped coughing. Relieved now. But then, my throat’s still aching from all the coughing since midnight.  Oh well, at least I felt a little better.

And one more thing, I can’t sleep lying down totally.  I need to stay on an upright position so that my nasal passages will clear through.  I am still not sure whether I could sleep in a position like that.

I will tell you that after a night’s sleep in a while.

By the way, I will see my doctor later. I can’t stand the coughing.  I am hoping that she might have a remedy for this.

It’s 5:20 guys and girls. Need to catch up on sleep. Wish me luck!

house arrest!

The weather’s quite hot these days and we are prone to sickness like cold and flu. Oh well, I did catch some of the viruses lingering out there.  So when I felt the symptoms coming in, I immediately texted my OB and asked her what I could do to prevent becoming ultimately sick.

She had this to say: “Gargle warm water with salt. Drink plenty of water. Ascorbic acid 500 mg 1 tab once a day. Bed rest for 2 days.”

Simple right? All natural.  She didn’t prescribe any meds for me to take. I can’t drink any meds because I’m pregnant.

This is why I love my OB.

Oh well, and now what she texted me is the reason why I’m home on a Wednesday and blogging away.

House arrest, anyone? 🙂
